Laser Hair Removal: How It Works, Price, and Sessions Needed
Laser hair removal uses targeted light energy to damage hair follicles at the root, offering a longer-term reduction in hair growth compared with shaving or waxing.
How It Works
The laser targets pigment within the hair follicle, and is most effective on follicles that are in an active growth phase at the time of treatment. Because hairs cycle through active and dormant phases at different times, a single session can't treat every follicle — which is why a full course of sessions is needed.
Laser vs. IPL vs. Electrolysis
Laser devices use a single, focused wavelength of light, generally making them more precise and effective for hair reduction than IPL (intense pulsed light) devices, which use a broader spectrum of light and are often positioned as a gentler, more gradual alternative. Electrolysis treats one hair follicle at a time with an electrical current, and is the only method that can claim true permanent removal — but it is far slower for treating large areas.
How Many Sessions You'll Need
Most patients need a course of around 6–8 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart to catch hairs across their full growth cycle, followed by occasional maintenance sessions as needed.
