FUE is the technique most people picture when they think of a modern hair transplant, but it isn't the only option — FUT still has a place for certain patients. Here's how the two actually compare.
FUE: Follicular Unit Extraction
FUE involves extracting individual hair follicles one at a time directly from the donor area, leaving small, dot-like marks rather than a linear scar. It generally allows a quicker return to normal activity and is well suited to patients who prefer to wear their hair very short.
FUT: The Strip Method
FUT removes a thin strip of scalp from the donor area, which is then dissected under magnification into individual grafts. It leaves a fine linear scar (usually well concealed by surrounding hair) but can yield a larger number of grafts in a single session, which matters for patients needing more extensive coverage.
How to Think About Which Is Right for You
- How many grafts you need, and whether that favors FUT's higher per-session yield
- Whether you plan to keep your hair very short (favoring FUE's less visible donor scarring)
- Your scalp elasticity and donor hair characteristics
- Recovery time you can accommodate
Neither technique is universally "better" — the right choice depends on your specific goals and anatomy, which is exactly what a proper consultation is for.
